The Three Most Common Hardwood Flooring Species

Although many people get excited by the thought of covering their floors with planks hewn from the exotic hardwoods that originate in South American and Africa, many others prefer a more traditional approach to decorating and prefer to stick with the “tried and true” tree species that have been in use for generations as flooring materials.

Interestingly, even these traditional woods can be stained to resemble exotic hardwoods, a situation that some feel is the best of both worlds.  They can have the comfort of decorating with a species that is a known quantity while still enjoying the lustrous and exotic shades typical of the tropical regions of the world.  Others, of course, prefer not just traditional woods but also the beautiful natural hues that once formed a mainstay of flooring in great homes across the nation.

Most Popular Flooring Species

 Three of the most common woods used in flooring applications are oak, maple and pine.  This last wood is often used to great effect to create a rustic look that calls to mind the homes of ordinary people in ages past.  Pine is a soft wood, however, so it does not stand up as well to hardwood floor sanding as do many other species.

Oak and maple are examples of hardwoods that tolerate floor sanding and polishing quite well.  Both are relatively dense and hard; maple has a finer grain and less visible texture than oak, which is the most common flooring species in use today.
