Wood Floor Buffing
Engineered wood floors are fast catching the imagination of people across the country. It is being viewed as a viable green alternative for traditional wood. Engineered wood floors comprise of layers of filler material that is sandwiched under a veneer of hardwood. This veneer can be anywhere from 1/32 to 3/16 of an inch. In fact it is the thickness of the veneer that determines whether floor sanding is feasible or not. This is because if the veneer is thin it will expose the layer beneath.
What to do before Sanding Before you start the floor sanding process, it is important that you check the thickness of the veneer. If the thickness is less than 1/16 of an inch, do not go ahead with floor sanding. Instead you can apply a coat of finish. Make sure that you take care of all the cracks, gaps, holes and other imperfections prior to going ahead with floor sanding.
Staining & Finishing After the floor sanding is over, apply a stain and let it dry. With the help of a floor buffer and a 150 grit or finer buffer screen, smooth the stain. Finally, wipe off any dust and then apply a second coat of stain.
If some local patches appear shinier or duller than the rest of the floor, the wood has absorbed more or less oil/wax than its neighbouring boards or blocks.
Buff the area lightly. If this doesn’t help, wait a few days to see if it ‘evens-out’. If it still looks different, feed it with some hardwax.
Hardwax gives immediate protection against dirt and drips, but wait eight hours before replacing furniture.
Give the oil ten days for complete absorption before placing rugs on your newly-restored floor.
Buffing your floor after applying oil or wax gives a better result – but use the right machine. Most electric small buffing machines are too light – and have minimal effect.
Use a semi-professional buffer (407mm) with a large white pad or an ‘old-fashioned’ cast iron 7 kg buffing-block.
The movement of the pad will warm and spread out the oil/wax more evenly.The wood absorbs it more so that your floor feels slippery for less time.
Apply the product twice a year (more often in heavy traffic areas) for protection against dirt and drips – and to bolster the wood’s long term durability. By doing this regularly you are avoiding the heavy cost of full floor sanding.
