Wood Floor Sealing & Varnishing
Once floor sanding and sealing is complete, you’ll want to keep your new floor in tip-top condition.
Always react promptly to potential water damage after wood floor restoration:
- mop up all spills as a result of watering plants or cleaning windows
– avoid placing porous pots or vases on a wooden floor, even with a waterproof saucer.
Allow air to circulate beneath them by using stands under the pot and saucer.
You will also quickly spot any water that has spilled onto the floor – and see if the plant has been overwatered.
Even after wood floor restoration, water leaks can threaten your beautiful new floor.
If this happens to you and you discover it quickly, take prompt action:
- stop the source of the leak either from a tank or radiator
(show your family members where the stopcocks are..).
- allow the floor to dry by removing boards, mopping up and allowing the water on the concrete base to evaporate.
- don’t worry about further damaging wet boards that are beyond repair – and adjacent boards. It’s preferable to leaving water underneath. Oak boards lying in water can become so badly stained that even floor sanding won’t restore them.
- take photos of the damage before and after removing boards for insurance purposes.
- on drying, the boards are likely to buckle and will need replacing. Matching with new boards can be tricky, so the solution might be a complete new floor.
After you remove the carpet and grippers, a dust and dirt layer will remain on your wooden floor.
Remove it with either a soft broom or cylinder vacuum cleaner with brush nozzle;
pressure from the wheels of an upright cleaner may scratch your floor.
Use a clean, hard brush to shift reluctant dirt.
Finish cleaning with a natural detergent (cleaning soap) diluted
in water and rinse off with a small quantity of water.
No washing-up liquid – it’s not suitable for wooden floors!
For persistent dirt, leave the soap solution on the floor for five minutes
and then remove it with a clean cloth, rinsing it regularly
with clean water. After a final wash and rinse with the soap and water, give the
floor time to dry before sanding.
