Pergo has given the first look at its new underfloor heating system. The system is intended as a simple way to keep houses warm and is described as being very simple to install. Homes with wood flooring can have a tendency to become cold underfoot, particularly during the winter season, and the new heating system is intended to replace flooring underlay as an additional form of heating for the home and should be seriously considered by owners of wood floors and those who are currently undergoing wood floor restoration.
The new underfloor heating system, which is being referred to under the name of “Quickheat” is particularly intended for use with pretty much any and all forms of floating flooring, including Pergo’s own range of laminate flooring.
Underfloor heating systems have been tried before, but many have shied away from using them due to the complicated nature of the installation, which is one advantage the Pergo “Quickheat” version has with its quick, no fuss method of installation. The system works via a range of mats which can just be rolled out and clicked into piece prior to the installation of the flooring, and then hooked up to an ordinary wall socket with the tools provided – an extraordinarily easy and simple form of installation that will no doubt prove very attractive to many potential consumers.
“It also means energy savings,” notes Kate Male, the regional marketing manager for Pergo. “You can normally lower the average room temperature by two to three degrees compared to stand alone heating systems.”
A great way of injecting new life into your house is to expose the floorboards and restore them to their natural glory. The age of fitted carpets is on the wane and there is a new spirit of eco friendliness and green awareness in the air. Wood is the perfect natural material and has been used by man for millennia. The world’s forests are now being managed much more effectively and it is the perfect time to display your own green credentials, as well as your exquisite taste, of course, by stripping out your carpets, sanding wooden floors and bringing out all natural beauty they have to offer.
Before starting on a room, you need to hammer down any projecting nails, secure loose pieces of wood. Next, fill in any gaps with slivers of wood for the wider ones and wood filler for smaller cracks. The machinery necessary for sanding can be rented from most good tool hire companies. You will need two pieces of equipment, a heavy upright sander and a slightly smaller, lighter one. You should also purchase sandpaper; you will need a reasonable quantity, depending on the state of the floorboards.
First use the upright sander to take the top layers off, working across the grain and then in parallel with the boards, going over them about five times until they are smooth. Change the sandpaper regularly, working down from course to fine. Finally, use the smaller sander to work around the edges of the room. This is a noisy job and takes some muscle, as the machines pull quite strongly, but dust is efficiently collected in bags for recycling and the end result will be a smooth wooden surface, ready for the application of wood-stain and varnish.
