Hardwood Floors Offer Surprising Benefits
Most people are aware that the beautiful straight lines and wood grain present in a hardwood floor will add lasting value to their home as long as they keep that floor maintained by contracting periodically with a floor sanding company so that floor sanding and refinishing can be performed. Relatively few homeowners, however, are equally aware of the other benefits that come from installing and maintaining a hardwood floor.
Improved Indoor Air Quality
A hardwood floor can be a healthy addition to a home. Unlike carpets and linoleum, wooden flooring is at base a natural product. Sometimes it is cured, sealed and finished with chemicals, but those with chemical sensitivity can seek out products that are largely natural in origin.
Hardwood floors also promote healthy indoor air because they are much less likely to trap pollen, dust, animal dander and other contaminants that can lead to respiratory problems for some people. Hardwood floors are free of fibres, which act as veritable magnets for such contaminants. Ceramic tile is also a largely natural product (though glazing can be artificial), but tile floors will have grout lines that trap contaminants. Hardwood floors are superior.
Ease of Cleaning
Carpet traps dirt and can easily absorb stains. Ceramic tile allows dirt to build up in grout lines, making it look unseemly. Even linoleum usually has a surface embossed texture that presents the same problem. However, a hardwood floor is a smooth plane with joins that are so fine that they collect very little debris. Those who want a floor that is easy to clean will choose hardwood over the alternatives.
