Modern lacquers give the appearance of an oiled floor to make the wood look more ‘natural’.
Oil soaks in but lacquer has a major disadvantage in that it just ‘sits’ on the floor.
The floor is therefore vulnerable to damage with a sharp object or ‘sanding’ with shoes: with no moisture protection, dirt and water penetration give a grey appearance.
Rubbing with a moist cloth makes things worse – so you may eventually need to sand and apply a new finish.
