Repairing Scratches in Hardwood Floors
Scratches in hardwood floors can seem like a big problem, ruining the look of a beautiful floor. The good news is that repairing scratches in hardwood flooring is not all that big a task, and can usually be done without too much fuss or expense providing you know what you are doing.
The first step in repairing scratches in a hardwood floor is to assess the actual level of damage that has been sustained, as light scratches need to be repaired via a different approach than deep scratches. To repair light scratches in hardwood floors, take fine steel wool and rub it very gently over the scratch, making sure that you are rubbing it along the grain of the wood unless you want to create new scratches! When it comes to deeper scratches, lightweight sandpaper should be used on the scratch, again being used along the grain of the wood rather than against it.
Once this is done, mineral spirits should be rubbed over the sanded area in order to smooth it out and also to pick up the fine dust that will have been generated by the floor sanding. The scratch should then be filled with premixed wood filler using a plastic putty knife, and then allow it to dry thoroughly. Make sure that the premixed wood filler is of a colour that matches the floor itself.
After the filler has dried, lightweight sandpaper should again be used, but only on the excess filler. The board can then be refinished with polyurethane, varnish or similar product.
