Unusual hardwood flooring choices: the “Carving Collection
Hardwood floors can be the height of elegance, lending homes the kind of luxurious ambiance that few other materials can rival. Some types of hardwood flooring, however, offer a great deal more than mere appearance. The “Carving Collection,” available from Mafi, a producer of hardwood floors, is designed to provide a play experience for children.
The surface of each plank in the Carving Collection is embossed with a variety of patterns and images. These do lend the floors a striking amount of visual interest, but their real purpose is interactive. Children can use them as a sort of template to assist them with their artwork. They can lay down a sheet of paper directly on the floor and colour on top of it using crayons to produce drawings that have textural elements as well as bits and pieces from the images available on the floor. This will not damage the floor since it is designed for just this purpose.
Perhaps best of all, when children have outgrown the crayons stage and their parents would prefer a more refined floor appearance, they can hire a floor sanding company to come in and abrade away the top layer of the floor. The Carving Collection is designed to be converted into a more traditional solid oak floor when desired.
In the meantime, children “can fill the outlines with any colour they want—it’s like a colouring book where they create their own landscape” remarks CEO Nic Neuman. Available images include flowers, kittens, and smiling faces.
