Wood Flooring Damaging Carpet Industry
Wood flooring is damaging the carpet industry in the United Kingdom, experts claim. Various sources are saying that the downturn in the carpet industry in the United Kingdom, while certainly being partly caused by the recession, has another major cause – that more and more people are abandoning traditional carpeted floors for the luxurious elegance of wooden flooring. The fact that wood flooring is seen as being much more durable than carpets and is likely to go for decades without needing any kind of wood floor restoration, providing it is adequately looked after, is being cited as a key reason why many consumers are opting to choose wood floors over carpeting.
However, this is not the end of the debate, with many in the industry believing that at least some of the downturn is caused not by the recession or even by the growing popularity of wood flooring, but by the fact that so many carpets in the United Kingdom are just so…boring.
Ian Hammond, the United Kingdom operations manager for Vorwerk, says that he believes the prominence of carpets with neutral colours may be putting off some consumers by just being so very dull. He notes that flooring exhibitions show that the other countries in the world do not share the same fear of bright colours in their carpets as British retailers. Injecting a little colour back into the picture may just be the industry’s golden ticket and way of fighting back against the rise in popularity of wood flooring.
